The author
Chris Kent

The secret is out: Chris Kent never existed. Stephen Clarke wrote Who Killed Beano?, as well as A Year in the Merde and Beam Me Up.

Until her recent tragic death at only 29, Chris wrote under her real name for a British medical journal.
She packed a lot into her short life. She did one year of medical training before switching to an oceanography course ("more scuba diving than in medicine," she told her parents). A year later, she switched again ("too many test tubes, not enough diving") and finally completed a degree in journalism.
This chopping and changing probably goes some way to explaining her ability to write both serious scientific articles and the anarchic fiction of Who Killed Beano?

Chris was tragically killed in a diving accident in France in the summer of 2002 when she became entangled in a discarded fishing net and ran out of air. Her parents found the novel, complete with its male hero and androgynous pseudonym, on the hard disk of her computer at her home in Brighton, on England's south coast.
They also found a partially completed text which Chris's twin sister is currently trying to complete.
